The mission of Habitat for Humanity International is to eliminate substandard housing worldwide. As HfHI's presence in Dearborn & Ohio Counties, our mission is to eliminate substandard housing locally by building basic, decent houses for families in need of a "hand up" not a "hand out".
We are one of seven chapters of Habitat for Humanity TriState OKI, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International serving several counties surrounding Cincinnati. As a chapter we are responsible for selecting local partner families and nurturing them as they grow into independent families. We raise funds to purchase land and then build houses with local volunteers and the family who will live in the home. The TriState Affiliate supports us with technical guidance, administrative support including financial matters, and regional fund raising from major corporations and grantors. We have a local Coordinating Council which reports to the TriState Board and meets monthly.
We serve deserving families who have an income of approximately 25% to 50% of the area median income and who currently live in substandard housing. All selected families must be willing to partner with us (i.e. contribute 500 hours of sweat equity and receive training in budgeting, home care, maintenance etc.) in a project to provide them with a modest, affordable home to own. The families then assume a no interest mortgage and begin making payments to Habitat. Churches and organizations supply teams of volunteers who work effectively with each other to help our partner families realize the dream of owning their own home.
We have built 9 houses, are continuing to support and nurture those nine families, and have selected our next partner family. We will be starting our tenth home in Aurora this Spring.
To cover the cost of building materials and supplies, we sponsor an annual mail campaign to individuals, churches, organizations and businesses. We hold other fund raising events yearly and we also use the mortgage payments from our existing homeowners to build homes for other deserving families.
